Find Out About The Different Types Of
Health Insurance Plans & How They Compare
South Dakota Health Insurance Plans That Fit Your Needs
Health Maintenance Organization
(HMO) Insurance
This is a network of doctors, hospitals, and other healthcare workers who will accept payment under your particular plan. The costs tend to be lower, but you have to pick a primary care doctor who is under this plan. Should you need to see a specialist, that doctor would then have to refer you.
Preferred Provider Organization
(PPO) Insurance
Under this plan, you can see whatever doctor you like, but you might have to pay more. The monthly premiums tend to be higher. A PPO plan does not require you to have a referral to see a specialist.
Point Of Service (POS)
Insurance Plans
This is very similar to an HMO where you pay less if you go to see doctors or visit hospitals that are under this plan. You also need a referral from your primary care doctor to see a specialist. It is considered a hybrid of a HMO and a PPO.
Exclusive Provider Organization
(EPO) Insurance
This is a plan where you must see a doctor or go to a hospital that is under this plan in order to get coverage. The only exception is in case of an emergency. You need to see a Primary Care Physician that is in this plan, but you do not need their referral to see a specialist. The premiums are low but you usually have to pay more out of pocket before the coverage kicks in.
Obamacare Affordable
Care Act Plans
The Affordable Care Act started in 2010 and is known as Obamacare since President Barack Obama signed it into law. It aimed to make healthcare affordable and keep premiums low. We can help you find the best plan under this act.
Medicare Parts A, B, C & D
Program Enrollment
These different parts are for different situations. If you need to go to the hospital as an inpatient, Medicare Part A covers that. If it is outpatient, then Part B handles that. Part C is a different way to get Medicare benefits. Part D is for prescription drugs. At South Dakota Health Insurance, we can help you make sense of it all.

“Mr. Marble was very informative regarding Medicare and how the plans worked and was extremely knowledgeable about health insurance in general.”
Stevie King★★★★★
“When I needed to find a good Medicare supplement program Lynn and his crew were recommended to me by my business insurance provider. Lynn personally took the time to prepare a number of options, then explained each one to me, and how it would work in tandem with Medicare. He has also assisted several of my friends and coworkers since then. I am proud to recommend him.”

IRS Rules & Guidelines For Employers Regarding Health Insurance Plans
The IRS wanted to consider making additional precise rules and instructions for employers. The intent of these restrictions was to address the impact of employers contributing to employees’ decision to obtain alternate health insurance. The question the IRS posed to itself is:
“What are the consequences to the employer if the employer does not establish a health insurance plan for its own employees, but reimburses those employees for premiums they pay for health insurance (either through a qualified health plan in the marketplace or outside the marketplace)?”
Wraparound Coverage
“Wraparound coverage”, a form of health coverage that is not subjected to the ACA rules that employers may help employees obtain starting in 2015 without being fined, is another option. This is basic health insurance that can be used to fill in the gaps of a regular health plan that meets ACA standards. However, the cost of providing this coverage to your staff cannot exceed 15% of the basic health plan that your employees are already covered under.
If you still want to get away from your staff and their health insurance coverage, you may avoid the “employer payment plan” penalties by simply giving them a raise large enough to cover the cost of their benefits to the degree that is desired and feasible.
Keep in mind that you will be subject to higher payroll taxes, and since this income is taxable to employees, the amount of the raise they’ll have available to purchase health coverage will be reduced by their increased tax burden. Workers might also forget why they were paid more in the first place, and start to consider themselves employees of a firm that does not respect its employees enough to provide health benefits.
Finally, if you are large enough to be affected by the ACA’s employer mandate, you won’t be able to get out of paying the penalty for failing to offer health coverage.
Sincerely,
Your Team at South Dakota Health Insurance
