Different Types Of Health Insurance Plans
Rapid Valley Health Insurance Plans That Meet Your Needs
Health Maintenance Organization
(HMO) Insurance
An HMO policy is a network of doctors, hospitals, and healthcare offices who are covered under your specific plan. Your costs will be lower only if you choose a provider who is under the HMO. Any appointments with a specialist will require a referral.
Preferred Provider Organization
(PPO) Insurance
Under a PPO policy, you have the ability to see whichever doctor you prefer, but your costs are typically higher. Additionally, the monthly premiums are also higher. However, a PPO plan does not require a referral to see a specialist.
Point Of Service (POS)
Insurance Plans
Point of Service plans are very similar to an HMO where your costs are lower if you visit a doctor or a hospital that is covered by the plan. You will also need a referral from your primary care physician to see any specialist.
Exclusive Provider Organization
(EPO) Insurance
Under EPO insurance, your plan requires you to visit a doctor or hospital under the plan to get any coverage, with the exception of an emergency. Your primary care doctor needs to be in the plan, but referrals are not required for a specialist. Premiums are typically lower.
Obamacare Affordable
Care Act Plans
Launched in 2010 by President Obama, Obamacare is designed to make healthcare affordable for all and to keep premiums low. Let our health insurance agents at South Dakota Health & Life Insurance help you find the best policy under the Obamacare act.
Medicare Parts A, B, C & D
Program Enrollment
Each part of Medicare is designed for a specific aspect of healthcare. Part A covers inpatient hospital care. Part B handles outpatient care. Part C provides more coverage for everyday healthcare, and Part D covers prescription drugs. Visit with our insurance agents to learn more.

IRS Rules & Guidelines For Employers Regarding Health Insurance Plans
The IRS wanted to consider making additional precise rules and instructions for employers. The intent of these restrictions was to address the impact of employers contributing to employees’ decision to obtain alternate health insurance. The question the IRS posed to itself is:
“What are the consequences to the employer if the employer does not establish a health insurance plan for its own employees, but reimburses those employees for premiums they pay for health insurance (either through a qualified health plan in the marketplace or outside the marketplace)?”
Wraparound Coverage
“Wraparound coverage”, a form of health coverage that is not subjected to the ACA rules that employers may help employees obtain starting in 2015 without being fined, is another option. This is basic health insurance that can be used to fill in the gaps of a regular health plan that meets ACA standards. However, the cost of providing this coverage to your staff cannot exceed 15% of the basic health plan that your employees are already covered under.
If you still want to get away from your staff and their health insurance coverage, you may avoid the “employer payment plan” penalties by simply giving them a raise large enough to cover the cost of their benefits to the degree that is desired and feasible.
Keep in mind that you will be subject to higher payroll taxes, and since this income is taxable to employees, the amount of the raise they’ll have available to purchase health coverage will be reduced by their increased tax burden. Workers might also forget why they were paid more in the first place, and start to consider themselves employees of a firm that does not respect its employees enough to provide health benefits.
Finally, if you are large enough to be affected by the ACA’s employer mandate, you won’t be able to get out of paying the penalty for failing to offer health coverage.
